Howard Zinn was a true and genuinely patriotic American.
Hate, arrogance, xenophobia, racism and militarism are all the marks of false patriots. And false patriots make their country weaker --NOT stronger. The tragedy is that they are never able to understand that.
Zinn was a patriot in the truest sense-- that is, someone who loves and cares enough about his or her country to 'stick their neck out' in order to try and make their country a better place; to try to make the society actually live up to its full potential and its stated ideals.
I saw his speech at the University of Houston, in 2003. A rock n' roll band warmed up the crowd before he spoke. Not too bad for a history teacher.
ReplyDeleteWow! I hadn't heard of his passing. A sad loss of a great scholar!

THAT is the spirit that makes a country strong.
